Hey folks. I recently moved to the Oceanside area from Canada (Toronto area), and am looking for a car. I have been test driving plenty of vehicles, but I'd prefer to stick with VW.

I have been to Bob Baker's lot, but the selection sucked! Ideally, I'd like to find an R32 or Jetta GLI in the area that still has a factory warranty. Any hints/tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Barry

Bob Baker is closest one

I'd recommend Classic VW in Escondido or City VW

90% chance of not finding either---

Classic VW in escondido had a GLI left a few weeks ago but it was an automatic---

Woah, thanks for the quick replies! I'm working in Vista, and still haven't even found a place to live (company it putting me up in a nice hotel :D ), so I have a lot of legwork to do.

On another topic:
I'm not familiar with CARB and how it applies to modified cars and such. How does CARB govern motor swaps and stuff along those lines?

I live in Carlsbad, bought my VW down at City though. I've heard from numerous sources (close friends, online) to avoid Miramar VW like the plague.

I think with CARB you can swap a newer engine into your vehicle, but always have to meet the emissions requirement of the year of the engine. Swapping an older engine in - even a bit older - is offlimits.
This is all casual 2nd-hand knowledge though, I have no experience with that .. and still haven't had my car smogged after owning it two years :D
I'm afraid ...

I picked up my car at City VW. Miramar (like others have said) was horrible to deal with. Best thing to do is look up all the area VW dealerships (yellowpages.com) and start making some calls.

The general rule with modding: not legal. Fortunately, if you're buying a new car, you won't have to deal with smog for several years.

You can do engine swaps and such, and some certain mods. TO make it all perfectly legal you have to have it inspected by a "referee" and he/she certifies that your engine swap/mods are al legit. You get a certificate saying this is so and then you're good. I believe you get one of those guys from the DMV. This is what me and a friend were told when nobody would smog his GTI do to an engine swap that hadnt been seen by the referee.

Either capo or metro I would stay away from herman cook, classic, city and miramar like the plauge had very bad experiences at each. I do know where there is a brand new tornado red gli that they would sell at invoice but it is not in california so you would have to wait till the car had like 5000 miles to bring it into cali but the state it is in has no sales tax

What have people been paying for GTI's anyways? I have had a few quotes for GTI's w/ leather, off the lot (including all taxes and fees) for $23 000 to $24 500.

Forgot to mention, I've also had service done at Bob Baker (since its only a few miles away).

Nothing bad to say, if I ever need a tow I'll surely take it there, but City VW seems to have way more bays, and all I ever hear (except for H20vwdvr's post, care to clarify?) is that City is good for some reason ... probably because a few Texers have worked there.

I have 80k service coming up soon, but hopefully I can find someone with some tools, knowledge and patience so I don't have to pay someone to change my brake pads / spark plugs
