The start of summer in southern California is usually noted by a certain time of year. For most it’s Memorial Day weekend, BBQ’s, parties at the beach, time with friends and family. For the so-cal Volkswagen and Audi community, it’s Dub Wars that marks the beginning of summer and the start of the so-cal tuner car scene for the European enthusiasts. Hosted at California speedway this year, located in Fontana California on June 5th, the show brought out an array of V-dubs and 4-ringers alike to give European car enthusiasts an opportunity to see what this summer will bring to the so-cal scene. Gone from this years show was the drag racing and road racing events of previous years, but in an effort to keep people interested along with the car show this year, there was also a large group of auto-crossers. Varying from everything your daily driven kraut rockets to full-blown track prepped racecars. Adding to the fun was an event called hooliganism which turned into an all out, no holds bared, see how much chaos and havoc I can cause in 2 minutes with my car, which gave spectators some drifting action from some well prepped street machines with their owners taking their cars to the limit to see just how much abuse they could handle before destroying tires or an engine.
The kick off party the previous night at the host hotel brought out everyone to the parking lot for a meet and greet with other enthusiasts in the industry. While more cars rolled in every hour from the multiple caravans that gathered throughout so-cal, the parking lot turned into a popular cruise spot for the evening as the sun went down. Unfortunately local law enforcement felt we were having too much fun and showed up to clear the area of all people in the parking lot with the help of a police helicopter-circling overhead, which cut things short for the rest of the evening. The next morning over-cast skies overhead didn’t make for what would be ideal show conditions since everything was outside. Roll–in started at 8- a.m. giving show participants some time to clean their vehicles and prepare for the days event. The auto-cross participants were also preparing for their run around the cones laid out just on the other side of the show area. With a large variety of vehicles in the show it took a good portion of a day to see everything around you. Multiple vendors made it out as well including well known tuners WRD (Water Cooled Racing) which had their silver MKIII VR6 powered track car on display and also making a strong presence during the auto cross racing along with some very good looking street prepped rides sitting in their booth on display. HPA Motor sports known for their project R28 GTI that was featured during the E-bay editors charity challenge put on by the major magazines published by Primedia, was also on hand showing off their twin turbo’d MKIV VR6 powered GTI package along with 2 other well tuned water cooled Volkswagens. Audi fans had vendors such as Revo Technik on hand showing of their new ECU reprogramming methods for those looking for that added bit of boost from their late model cars. There seemed to be something for everyone within the show area, whether you were an Audi or Volkswagen enthusiast or just a European car fan enjoying the show.
Autocross participants gave everyone a great show as participants danced their cars around the cones laying out the coarse trying not to take out to many at once. Needless to say the first guy to loose it was not a VW or Audi, which nearly took out the timing equipment on a last hard turn before the front straight. Kudos to the few coarse workers as they did a good job of keeping the coarse lay out in tact, by responding quickly to any cones that became knocked over and keeping the track in good shape as well as keeping the group of drivers organized. There were plenty of fast cars running the coarse making for good competition between the competitors. I even ventured my MKIII onto the coarse for a few laps making some common mistakes of going into a corner too hot and not braking properly, but I’m a drag racer and I’ve never ran an auto cross with my car before so I was happy with my best lap of 52.046. There were plenty of others faster than me with the best time in the low 44-second range. Later on that afternoon the hooliganism event saw a large variety of cars of German and Japanese make. What is hooliganism you ask? Take uncontrolled drifting, excessive burnouts, and cars doing doughnuts, throw it all together in an all out battle royal, with each driver getting 2 minutes to do what ever they wanted. The crowd’s reaction and cheers from the drivers display on the pavement determined the winner. Cars that were rear wheel drive seemed to dominate, as most of the car owners took to doing controlled figure 8 slides or doughnuts on a very large and dusty pavement area. It was all for fun though and the crowd seemed to enjoy it.
This was a great show and an awesome way to kick off the summer for all car enthusiasts alike. Many new trends will be hitting the streets and shows this summer bringing the European car community to the top of the tuner world’s game. With more parts availability and interest in the scene this is definitely going to be a show season not to miss.
