FYI: A chip is not going to affect ignition coils in any way shape or form. Coil pack problems/failures are just one of the many downfalls to the 1.8t motor.

there was a VW/Audi recall on the coil packs. you should be able to get them replaced under warranty if the service was never done.

So are you chipped or not? Did the car run fine after the coilpacks were replaced?

Your engine will wear down at a rate governed by the chip you get. Of course the more aggressive chip, the quicker the wear and tear on your engine components and such.

So does anyone know what types of problems the chip should cause ....

This early in the game you shouldn't expect to see any problems. But, some common problems are:
Short Term:
cold solder joints on soldered chips = car runs like crap if it runs at all
Failed DV due to extra boost
Charge lines popping off due to extra boost
Possible failed turbo due to extra boost
Excessive fuel consumption due to newly found lead foot
Long Term:
Excessive blow-by due to extra boost
