BMW plans family car
MUNICH: The German automaker BMW is planning a family car that will be neither a van nor a sedan.
The Sales chief, Mr Ludwig Willisch, in an interview published in the Berliner Zeitung newspaper, said the manufacturer wanted to do more to attract family buyers.
"It would not be the classical van, he said. We are considering solution that is both appropriate to BMW and attractive to families. It must combine the excitement of a sports-style off- roader and the elegance of the classic limousine".
Mr Willisch predicted customers would like the smallest BMW, the 1-Series, which rolls out of showrooms in Germany in September. The 1 will go down in the annals as a success, he said. Advance interest had been huge. We have advance orders in Germany alone that run to a high four-digit figure. Our order book is nice and full.
