Yes, but you have to declare it to the airline, it has to be in a locked, hard-sided case, the ammunition has to be packed (not loose, and not in a clip) and it can't be black powder.

i believe this to be true and correct.
also...some airlines have boxes for such purpose...but they charge you a substantial fee.

right, got the "locked in a case and unloaded" from the airline. they said nothing about the ammo not allowed in a clip, geez........guess I'll go unload the clips.

well, I'm off to Boise tomorrow for a lil road trip bringin' the new car home! weeeee!

You'll need to have the ammo in the factory box. I only say that because I've run into trouble with the airlines and trying to transport loaded magazines.

gun- because I'll be driving for 2 days alone and why the hell not ya un-american bastards?!!

car- '91 200 20v Turbo (future engine donor)


side note- it was absolutely frightening at the airline! all I had to do was sign my name to a tiny piece of paper declaring that there was a firearm in my luggage, scary.
I had it in my locked case, unloaded but with 2 15 round loaded clips.
