I have a 96 gti 2.0l....when i step on the brake lights the rear amber lights light up as well as the break lights. also, when i use the turn signals the left signal functions in a tweaker fashion, but only in the front signals, the rear signals go haywire....everything in the back functions all together at offset timing....so does the right signal, except it does not funtion like a tweaker blinker, it just goes crazy. i have checked the wiring in the tailights and all the fuses....i need more ideas of what to do in order to fix my problem. all in all....my brake lights and turn signals do not function properly.

I've found that most VW electrical gremlins can be traced to a bad ground connection somewhere. That's where I'd start looking.

i was thinking that too, but i need a starting point for looking. how do i go about testing the ground connections?

check the circut resistance with a DVOM, or just run another ground. Its hard without looking at the car to be much help though

You really need a wiring diagram. I would start by looking at the grounding points in the rear of the car, where you're having all the problems. Start by looking for corrosion, loose connections, etc. It may help to turn stuff on and start wiggling connections to look for the trouble spots.

A DVOM is a digital multi-meter. You can get them just about any auto store, electronics store, or even Sears and Wal Mart. They costs vary, but you get what you pay for.
