This is on a MKII, 1.8 8v, manual steering vehicle.
I was deleting my ac this weekend and ran into a problem. I stripped the head on one of the hex (allen) bolts that connects the crank pulley.
I've tried several methods to get remove it, but because of its' location it been the biggest p.i.a. I've ever had to deal with on any of my dubs.
The conclusion I've come to, is that I need to weld a hex bit socket to the head of the bolt & ratchet it off. I called a couple of shops (this is a last resort, as I have yet to take any of my cars to a shop & would like to keep it this way), but they all have heavier duty welding gear, for mufflers & such.
I need to find someone that has somewhat more precise welding gear & the ability to weld the socket to the head of the bolt.
And just to snip some of the suggestions in the bud, here are the things I've already tried.
-Larger size allen & torx bit hammered in.
-PB Blaster, tap, wait, PBB, tap, wait... repeat over & over & over...
-Drill the center & use a reverse bit (easy out), which snapped off in the whole I drilled.
- Grind a notch into the head, so I can get a screwdriver or chisel in it to turn it out. Didn't work because of the dish of the pulley not allowing the dremel cutting disk to reach it at a straight angle.
-Cutting of the head of the bolt, removing the pulley, then twist out the stud with vice grips. Again, won't work well, dut to the dish of the pulley & the large multi-point "bolt" in the center of the pulley.
If there are any other ideas, I'm open to suggestions.
As far as the weld option can anyone provide some assistance? Compensation will be provided if needed.
for reference, my other post from vortex mirroring this one:
