Im in the market for an new exhaust system for my MK3 jetta vr6!?! im low on cash and i cant find any good deals on a magnaflow system, would a custom job be a good idea? how much am i looking on spending for one and where to find a good deal or who does them?
You could just delete the OEM suitcase to get a "different" sound, but it still doesn't come close to a Magnaflow.
I have a Magnaflow system on my '97 .......... listen/see here (image quality sucks, but gives you an "idea" of how it will sound): :D

.......and one of these VW's doesn't have a Magnaflow......can you guess which one? :D

Ed Hanson's Muffler in Lemon Grove carries Magnaflow and does amazing work. A lot of folks have gone to him for custom work, myself included. His prices are very reasonable as well.

That's what I have done .. but its the VR6 on my 2.0, so gives me a bit of a benefit too.
I would highly advise against Midas for anything. When I tried to have my install done, the first place I went [which I thought was cool with it] refused to do it, saying they didn't know if it was legal (I don't know now, but thought it was).
So I gave up and went to Midas ... they charged a lot, and managed to cut my brake line during the install. Fixed it and swapped my fluid no charge, but it kept leaking .. fixed again now but e-brake makes the rear end groan
So yeah, don't go there. My car is now more ghetto than before ... but it DOES sound pretty wicked ;)

Ed has fair prices ... he doesnt give deals, but thats because he's a straight up shop
you could find a better price else where, but reliability and service, Ed Hanson's is top notch.
