View Full Version : Loose top nut in suspension strut

I did a quick search about this "clunking" noise that is coming from my suspension/steering and I found posts (from Audizine) saying that it's most likely coming from the loose top nut of the suspension.

The clunking has increased quite a bit within a week so I was wondering is it still safe to drive the car regardless of the noise since I cannot get it fixed 'till weekend 1.5 week from now.

The noise comes from every single little bump or when I'm making a U-turn.

I would try and get it fixed sooner rather than later.

Why don't you just see if it's loose and tighten it???

I guess it would be fine to drive on if you don't mind dying.

Is it even worse now? Those nuts don't just come off. They are nylon locking nuts. You're probably in need of a new one.

If it is getting much worse, you may just want to go ahead and pull the spring and shock on that side and check it. You might be able to tighten it with a spark plug socket since some have a hex shape on the outside that you can get a wrench on. That will hopefully let you get an allen down in there to hold the shaft on the shock from turning.

Oula does what he can... he's learning to do it all himself.

Hmm, i know for a fact that Mike tightened those nuts pretty well. It's not like he doesn't have the right tools to get to the front top struts. So unless the nuts are totally backing out, it's not them.

Sway bar endlinks?

The best thing to do is pull the wheel and start inspecting everything.

I think he did and didn't find anything. Now that its louder and presumably looser he might though.

That's what we've done several times already. We've checked sway bar links, tie rod ends and everything looks just fine.

This is driving me nuts...!

Yeah, that ain't tha teasy to do in a small garage with 2 jack stands. The whole shock/spring has to be removed from the car in order to do that. F that!

Does it only clunk at full lock?

What do you mean by full lock?

What do you mean by full lock?

Full lock is when you turn the wheel all the way to the side. So there is full lock left and full lock right.

Does it only clunk at full lock?

Nope, doesn't need to be fully locked in order to clunk.

If you push down on that corner of the car, do you hear the same clunk? does it feel extra soft or harsh?

The corner itself feels just fine. No clunking when pushing that corner.

Maybe it's the infamous control arm clunk that plagued some of the B5's?

if it is in fact the top nut all you have to do is open your hood, remove the cap and tighten the bolt, there is no need to remove the whole strut.

Yep, the whole thing has to be removed. There's no access under the hood.

I agree with you Paul. I wouldn't consider those replies any helpful. If he has nothing else to say that "do it yourself bla bla bla", I suggest to STFU.

B5/B6/B7 a4's none have that access. you have to drop the shock assembly to get to it.

Boys don't cry.

I would say I'm sorry
if I thought that it would change your mind,
but I know that this time
I have said too much, been too unkind.
I try to laugh about it,
cover it all up with lies.
But I just keep on laughing,
hiding the tears in my eyes.

'Cause boys don't cry.
Boys don't cry.

I would break down at your feet and
beg forgiveness, plead with you.
But I know that it's too late,
and now there's nothing I can do.
I try to laugh about it,
cover it all up with lies.
I try to laugh about it,
hiding the tears in my eyes.

'Cause boys don't cry.
Boys don't cry.

I would tell you that I loved you
if I thought that you would stay,
but I know that it's no use
and you've already gone away.
Misjudged your limits.
Pushed you too far.
Took you for granted.
Thought that you need me more. yeah well now,
I would do most anything to
get you back by my side.
But I just keep on laughing
hiding the tears in my eyes.

'Cause boys don't cry.
Boys don't cry.

Boys don't cry.

Um, I don't know if this helps at all, but I had a clunking noise on my MK4 GTi forever. I tried to figure it out, and I thought it was the upper strut bolt thingies. We tightened those and it was still there. We then realized that it was the coilover moving around the strut and like clicking on something...

I have no idea if that makes sense because I'm on vicodin right now :)
