hey guys,
i have a Nikon Coolpix 880 digital camera. Today when I turned it on, the lens does not come out as it used to. Then when i turned it off, it displays "System error". Is there anything i can do to make it work? or will i have to send back to Nikon and pay big bucks for it? :(
any help would be appreciated, thanks!
Michael
I take it you've tried removing the battery from the camera and putting it back in? Make sure the battery is charged for one. See if the camera has a reset feature if not then check your manual or post up on one of the photo forums and see if anyone else has had your problem.

Try the nikon website. Or call their support line.

*disclaimer: not pia, mario*
if the lens isn't coming out, then it's probably that motor (perhaps one of the gears)....sounds like of those too-expensive-to-fix problems

Definitely sounds like a dead motor. Do you hear any whirring when you power the unit?
It's 4-year-old model, but if you purchased it recently it may be covered under warranty. If it is not, it will probably cost more to repair than to replace it with the exact same model, which can be had on eBay for as little as $120 + shipping for a used unit. Of course, this is only if you really are attached to the camera, the new Nikon line if cheaper for similar features if you feel it's time to move on.

i do hear the motor whirring, but the lense is not coming out. It was a great camera, but maybe it's time to move on.

If the motor is whirring then all is not so lost, it may be easy to fix. Of course, this depends on your comfort level opening up a digital camera. :)
It's not bad. A lot of tiny screws, but all fairly easy to disassemble.

I just found out one thing. Even though the lense does not come out when i turned the camera on, but when I press the zoom button, the lense comes out and extended to the largest zoom then went back in. That's the point where the camera LCD display "System Error".

Hmm. So the motor and the gears are fine.
Maybe the iris isn't opening to let light hit the CCD?

It is weird, when I turned on the camera, the LCD turns on and shows a blurry screen which means the lense isn't focused. I was thinking maybe something is stuck to prevent it from coming out, but if it is stuck, how can it still extend to maximum zoom? ..

Camera fix update:
After I took apart the camera and blew some air in it. I put in the battery and turned it on. It worked just like it's supposed to. Even though I broke some retaining clips because it was my first time taking apart a camera, but I am glad it worked at the end.
Thanks everyone for your advice and help! I'm greatly appreciated!!
