Ok so I tried surfing a couple times and I love it!
Granded I'm still getting the crap kicked out of me and I drank about 2 gallons of salt water last time I went out....but what can I say I'm a glutten for punishment!
So I rented your standard 8' foam cadillac.....
I'm in the market for a ~8' semi-long board, pref egg shaped tri fin....
What do you think? I want something that turns allil bit but I want a fun learnign board...

Surfing.... came easy to me. I learned on a 6 ft board (short) at an early age. Spent most of my highschool life surfing. Barely graduated because of it. :(
Longboards are easy to catch waves on but they dont handle very well. They are basically a catch the wave and ride it into the shore type surfing. Hang 10 stuff. Ive only riden one a couple times, at my youth, they were not popular nor cool. Old mans board. I see they have made a huge comeback!
Then there is a mid board. Sort of an inbetween board that is a little more work to catch the wave, but can do some turning maneuvers.
Then the short board. Hard to catch waves on (need good upper body strength. PADDLE BITCH, PADDLE!!) But oh so much fun when you do catch the wave. Turns like a Scirocco! Useless in really small surf tho. (4ft stuff.)
The only way to get better is to just go surfing. You get battered for a while then suddenly something clicks and you get it. Might just be the whole body strength thing at work but at some point, it gets easier, more fun and then its en with you and the wave. Then you spend most of your time counting sets and waiting for that one wave to come in.
I still get beat to shit, body surfing in 6ft stuff in Hawaii. Go figure. The good thing about San Diego beaches is the bottom is all soft sand. If you take a headder the landing will hurt, but wont kill you or leave coral to grow in your back. Wear a summer suit and you wont get belly rash. I think ive been beaten and battered more from my board than anything or anyone else.
(Never yank on the leash!!) :D
