As the show season for 2005 winds down, the last of the small independent European car shows rolled into the city of Irwindale, California hosted at the famous Southern California Irwindale Speedway with Dub Fest. This all-VW event played host to an array of air and water-cooled Volkswagens as well as a slew of Audis and even a number of Porsches were brought in by members of the Porsche Club of America from the Orange Coast Region to mix things up a bit. Enthusiasts were given a full day of rides, girls, new products, as well as some great autocross action that took up three quarters of Irwindale’s famed 3/8 mile speedway.

Dub Fest organizers got things rolling early and did a great job of keeping chaos to a bare minimum while the members of the Orange Coast Region of the P.C.A organized the autocross action for the day. The familiar smell of Armor All and wax consumed the air while car show participants got their vehicles wiped down and ready for the show. Attendees quickly filled the area looking to see what was new to the show scene, including cars from as far as Washington State and Arizona that made the trek out for the show. The growing Southern California car club SoCalR32.com had a very large group in attendance with 40+ vehicles in the show itself. The rest of the event was a mix of multi-generation V-dubs as well as a slew of well modified Audis, Porsches as well as a couple of Ferraris to drool over.

As the day progressed, DJ’s played live music to keep things alive as visitors got a chance to test drive the Volkswagen MKV GTI or Jetta on a small laid out cone course just outside the show area. Test drivers were given 2 quick laps but weren’t really allowed to bring the cars through the gears due to the small course. People were given a free shirt and a bit of an idea of how the new cars handled after they walked away smiling from the experience.

The autocross course brought some great action especially after the early morning clouds cleared and things began to warm up a bit. Participants got to have some fun thru a technically laid out course taking up most of the infield section as well as a majority of the famed 3/8-mile oval of Irwindale Speedway. With some very tight sections combined with a good high-speed area at the end, some drivers were able to see speeds over 80mph. My photographer even got a bit of a run himself as he found himself climbing a nearby infield fence, trying to dodge a yellow Audi S4 that a nameless driver got sideways while navigating the high-speed section of the course. The Audi driver did a good job of keeping the car off the wall and thankfully my photographer and the nearby course worker walked away unscathed.

This was a great way to finish off the show season for Euro enthusiasts as well as giving people a chance to get some ideas for what they can do to their car for next season. I can't wait for next year, when I can maybe do a better job of autocrossing. Now if I can just figure out how to avoid hitting those damn cones....
