View Full Version : need info: jetta/golf 1.8T w/tiptronic
Erin and I are selling here beloved, reliable Mitsu, albeit unsafe, and she wants a 1.8T Jetta, BUT it has to be an auto, I know the standard auto is junk, but I left right after the tiptronic came out and haven't seen how they have held up, all my friends at the dealers say they are pretty good, but the havent lived with them.......So I got a few questions............
What are your experiances?
Do they hold up to mods, i.e. chip and other bolt-ons?
Are they finickey?
Gas mileage?
I will be buying a Certified one from Capo with around 20K on it as I'm friends with the sales manager and general manager. BTW if you need another VW PM me.......
TIA

I got my Jetta from Capo Too! I have an '02 1.8T with Tiptronic. I don't have any engine mods but I am getting about 27mpg last time I checked and haven't had any problems with shifts. I just got my 60k service and I have nothing to complain about. I got my car from Nick C. He is in Finance now, I had a good experience there.

I have one w/near 60K on it. So far it has not given me a problem (knock on wood). I have a revo chip, polyurethane inserts, intake, and a catback. I like it, I think I'm getting close to needing that timing belt change though.

Tiptronic=Automatic Transmission.
There's no mechanical differences, but there is additional programming that allows you to select what gear you want.
actually its a completely different unit made in japan, rather than the old AG4 slush box, Nice to hear they seem to hold up ok, keep'em coming!

The transmission may be a different model, but the mechanical basics are the same. The heart of Tiptronic tranny, whether it be an Audi, VW, or Porsche, is still an automatic with a torque convertor, bands, etc., etc.
Some people get the impression that the Tiptronic is an automatically shifting manual, a la the DSG.
oh yeah, its still an auto with a torque converter, I thought you meant it was the SAME tranny used in the normal autobox car. An SMG or DSG it ain't thats for sure........
