TEAMMIGHTYMINIZ Announces the Intake Shootout/Dyno Day
Ok San Diego MINI owners, now it is our turn to try something out…
A Dyno Day
We would like to invite everyone to attend a Dyno Day held at JBA Racing (http://www.jbaracing.com/index.htm?dyno.asp~mainFrame) in San Diego Saturday, October 29, 2005. We have a limit of 13 cars for the day. The deal is 2 pulls for $45.00. Below is the reservation list. If there are any no-shows, we will fill the spaces on a first-come first-served basis. Dyno for the shootout will begin around 8 AM and others at around 9 AM. To sign-up, please post in this thread.
In conjunction with the Dyno Day, TMMZ will be conducting a shootout between various air intake systems. We will be installing and testing each intake at the dyno event. We invite everyone to come and watch the numbers for these various intakes. We will be testing Alta, Helix and M7 and possibly others.
For installation of the intakes, the guys from Creative Autoworks (http://www.creativeautoworks.com) have agreed to help out. Providing a neutral opinion for installation, they have many years of experience with tuning cars. They are excited to paricipate with the shootout to help break-in their new facility.
Creative Autoworks is located just around the block from the Dyno Location. They have offered to do other installations a BBQ, and have offered some great deals. So if you are interested, please give them a call (858.279.8900) so they can order your parts.
The TEAMMIGHTYMINIZ Air Intake Shootout
The Test Procedure....
The Intake Shootout shall be performed using a stock MINI Cooper S (One car will be used).
Prior to any modifications, a check for engine oil temperature shall be noted, and an initial dyno test shall be performed.
A third party will be used for installations. The car shall be allowed to cool or heat until oil temperature matches the initial number. If possible, after each dyno test the installer will take a short test drive to feel the difference.
The Comparisons….
HP
Bling
Ease of Installation
Overall feel
Cost vs. hp
The products (listed alphabetically) – Alta, Helix and M7 (possibly more)
The When….
Saturday, October 29, 2005
Everyone is invited to come down and witness the event. We encourage proponents of each Air Intake to witness the testing.

I've never owned a car that was dynoed, and I've never been to a dyno day.
But dang it, my TDI is running so great right now, with no performance mods except bigger injectors, that I'm just curious what my hp and torque numbers really are.
Is there still room for another this Saturday?

Hopefully I'll have some race gas left over from the Qualcomm; if that's the case, I'll run. I may just come to check it out anyway.

there are a couple places open. If you want i can sign you up, or show up between 8 and 9 and we'll fill open times. We are starting the shootout at 8. Then after the first few are done install at Creative Autoworks (a block away). But there will probably be cars at both places.
Everyone is welcome to come by even if not dynoing. Check out the Creative Autoworks cars.

ok, just checked. It is a dyno dynamics. http://www.dyno.com.au/
It is a 2WD only.

Also, there is parking behind Creative Autoworks. It is about a block away. So people could park near there, and take one car. They will have a few nice cars for display on Saturday.

Pretty much a waste of time/money for me. That whole setup (one guy, no tie downs, cramped area) there wasn't appealing to begin with, then the dyno operator couldn't get the speedo correction right and my previous 272/270 whp/wtq put down 186/230...awesome. At least they didn't charge me full price. I'll stick with the Dyno Shop from now on.

So he couldn't figure out why your power/speed/rpm numbers were coming out wrong? Sucks.
Still, most everyone else seemed satisfied with the dynos. And it was great to meet some enthusiasts.

10-29-2005, 11:12 PM
He was revving it to 6.5k, but the graph was showing 5.6k and each correction didn't seem to be on point at all. By the third run I was over it anyway. I'm not exactly sure what the overall problem was, but it was enough for them to give me a discount (after Steve's intervention, of course).
Every other dyno seemed to be the ball; not sure why I was the odd guy out. I definitely know my car isn't at 185hp, though. The car feels just as good as the day it put down ~270 and at 23psi, I could have 0 compression in a cylinder and still make more power probably.
I was shady of the whole gig when the dyno guy told Steve he was running lean at a 12:1 a/f and that on the west coast (with 91 octane) the optimal ratio is 11:5. Never heard that and I can't understand how that could be correct in any sense. Ratios are ratios.
Time to go get loose as a goose.

man, i am sorry to hear that it didn't work for your car. It was strange because the other cars did not have any problems.
The place is actually reputable. http://www.jbaracing.com/
They run dynos all week, the mustang groups use them all the time as well. They also are featured in a number of magazines (looked them up before scheduling).
Again, sorry that it didn't work out for your car sandiegobmx.
