Like the title says, i am sure none of you have ever had this problem, but my check engine light is on in my vr. Its been on for a while actually. I have heard autozone pulls the codes for you for free and find that hard to believe if there is no catch. I was wondering if anyone knows where i can get the codes pulled for next to nothing or even free. I am in newport beach, so hopefully its some place close?

Autozone will lend you a tech II to take out to your car and pull the code with. If you pull the code and come in they know that 50% of the people will go ahead and buy whatever part that the Autozone clerk recommends. So to let you borrow the tool is a benefit for them.

Yep, what Steve said. The percentage varies per store, but in nearly all cases, it works more to their favor. For a while, though, they raised outrage from repair shops. You would too if suddenly, you can't rape customers for an $80 diagnostic fee because someone else down the street could do diagnostics for free.

just clean your throttlebody real quick. it will go off the next day. vag is a code reader for vag cars. just a program that can be installed on a laptop.

www.ross-tech.com (http://www.ross-tech.com)
The program being referred to is VAG-COM, VAG for short. VAG stands for Volkswagen Auto Group and COM I assume is communication. Essentially it is the SAME diagnostic toolt hat the dealer uses.
The program is about $100 and the cable is about $100.
If you want to just pull codes, you an use their free version of the software, but you still need the cable. Or you can just get someone to pull the codes for you...

I am going to venture a guess that it is your secondary air injection pump or you just had a misfire. If the light has been on for a while I assume you are still driving the car with no problems, right?. Ross-Tech sells a VAG diagnosis tool that works with you laptop and probably a PDA. It' a good investment if you like working on your VW.

Get the VAG...The 200 or so you spend will be well worth it!
