For the T.
Certain Pep Boys carry it. Some Targets and K-Marts even used to carry the large 5 quart containers. It's a store by store thing. Call around. I bought a bunch from a guy on the Tex that had a friend that worked at a Jiffy Lube or something and was selling it for cheap. Also, if Kragen sells it, they run discount ads in the Sunday paper every once in a while for synthetic oil (but I haven't seen 0-40 there).
mobil 1 or syntec, I have been running either or for the last 5 years in all my cars, from the truck, bugs, GTI, landcruiser, those two brands are tops..........hell its been in my GTI for 60K and no leaks yet at 136K

I got my 0w-40 Mobil 1 at Kragens. Check their website and it will tell you which store has it in stock.

hahaha... that sux. I usually get my 0w-40 at Walmart. They usually carry it. Just ask. BTW, i was digging around the garage the other day and found a bosch oil filter with the # 72211. Is this the oil filter # for the 1.8T motor?

Why Do You Want 0w-40???
Mobil 1 0W-40 is one of the types of oil approved, or recommended for use in the 1.8t. HAHA
My Owners Manual says 5w...

Why Do You Want 0w-40???
Also recommended for the VR6

From what I've read, the Mobil 1 0w-40 is a superior synthetic oil. That and it is one of the few synthetics with that VW approval. The 0w rating is a pour rating and when the oil heats it acts more like a 5w-40 oil.

Why Do You Want 0w-40???
Because it's one of the recommended oils for the 1.8T, if you don't want to use it then don't... I don't see why it's such a big deal to you. If I really wanted to I would use 5w-30/40.

Calm down there turbo... I didn't know it was a recommended oil for the 1.8t and I was trying to see if you knew of some advantage of using it over 5w. My manual says 5w.

This is an amusing thread...
Why people who live in SoCal care about the viscosity of their oil at 0 deg F is beyond me... :p

Because in 98 days I won't be in SoCal anymore, I'm going to be moving back to Michigan where it matters

if your looking on using the Mobil1 0-40W, the autobacs store in stanton sells it for $7.49 per quart. it aint cheap but its the good stuff!
now if your a "drive it like you stole it!" type of guy, then you can up for the best
(motul 0-40W) also on sale there for the same price as the mobil1. go with Motul!
here is a link to the shop www.autobacsusa.com

i hate oil....i use water .......its cheaper........and like said before...its california....its not going to freeze.
I prefer the reverse osmosis kind. If you use mineral water....it can tend to build up deposits on the piston rings and reduces your gas mileage because of the back pressure. If you do live in colder areas....do the glow plug mod...its a really big help.

I used to buy at Kragens, and probably will again.
But $20 for a 5-quart jug at Walmart is too good to pass up. 5w40 for me, but 0w40 should be marginally better in Michigan.
