So I'm planning on chipping my car in the future and I was wondering if it's imperative for me to get an exhaust. See, I hate that damned bumble bee in a coffee can sound of most exhausts and I cant really justify/afford dropping the 650+ on a deep, growly sounding one. So i was wondering if I need to run an exhaust in order for the chip to be happy. Thanks for the help.

I would'nt say it's imperative, but it is nice to have. With the stock exhaust, you can feel your turbo being restricted on the higher RPM range. If you don't want to spend too much, look in the FS forums in the vwvortex and you'll find folks selling their full Turbo Back exhuasts really cheap. BTW, chip + stock exhaust = not bad. You'll be more than satisfied with a chip and your stock exhaust.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I don't think you can get the Bumble Bee sound with a VW........ Yes the exhaust has some to do with it but each engine makes a different sound when it comes to their exhaust. My exhaust is from Thermal technologies. I like it a lot but I also like the Miltec exhaust. Both of those exhausts sound very very nice. A close tie for me between those two.

And you will see more gains from a chip. I would say chip first and exhaust second. (turbo back)
