When car enthusiasts think wagon, performance isn’t exactly a term that follows with it. Through the mid to late 90’s Volvo took those phrases and put them together, creating a vehicle that would give driving enthusiasts something to fulfill their need for a large family sized car, while retaining the performance any true driving fan would enjoy. Jason Hooper shows us that you can take that performance to the next level with his 1997 Volvo 855R wagon.

This is Jason’s second Volvo 855R. He originally had a ’96, but it was unfortunately totaled in an accident, after almost 2 years of searching he found what you see here just a few miles from his house no less and he started giving the car a more personal touch as soon as he got it home. Jason started out by giving the factory 2.3 liter turbo charged 5 cylinder a Dawes Devices manual boost controller and a K&N cone filter to replace the factory air cleaner. The custom fabricated 3-inch cat back exhaust system helps the engine breathe heavier though out the entire RPM range. Jason also added a Speedtuning® 17 PSI ECU to help maintain higher boost levels when the go-pedal is put to work. The ignition has been kept stock aside from the Nology® wires that are used in place of the factory originals. A carbon fiber valve cover, a factory add-on he got from the dealership, really lets the engine stand out from the rest. Since the stock internals of these cars are so strong, a Turbonetics® T3/TO4E is currently in the works, which will definitely up the power output once properly tuned.

As Jason went through making engine tweaks, the suspension received proper modification as well to help handle the added power. Koni® adjustable shocks and struts combined with B&G lowering springs handle the bumps in the road. An OMP strut tower brace keeps chassis flex to a minimum, while the addition of VMS sway bar end-links allow for added chassis adjustments. Volvo 18-inch Pegasus wheels from a Volvo S60 fill the wheel wells and are wrapped in Nitto Neo Gen 225/40/18’s. Jason also swapped in a set of 302mm Powerslot® rotors in lieu of the factory 280mm front rotors and added stainless steel brake lines in all four corners to the mix for a better feeling brake pedal.

The interior has been left relatively stock aside for the addition of Autometer® boost and pyrometer gauges to monitor engine vitals. The stereo has been given the tuner treatment with the addition of a Pioneer DEH-8600MP head unit combined with the XM satellite system and a Pioneer 6 disk changer. Power comes from a Diamond® 300 watt 4 channel and Alpine® amplifiers. Diamond® CM351 speakers fill the front of the cabin while Infinity® Reference 501i handle sound duties in the back. Ground shaking abilities come from a pair of 12 inch MB Quart® subs, which reside in a custom fabricated box, which sits in the back of the trunk but still allows plenty of room for trips to the grocery store.

Jason has built himself a tuner car that any enthusiast would be proud to own, although he isn’t finished with what you see here. The future holds the addition of the larger Turbonetics® turbo, along with a Dastek® Unichip piggyback software for added tuning abilities. Jason is also looking to bolt in a 6 speed manual transmission and change out the suspension with a full coil-over set up.

I don’t know of too many soccer moms that are looking to modify their wagons so extensively, but if you are looking to get there in a hurry Jason can show you the way.
