Those of you who want IM at work.

There is a simple way to get around IM port blocking, though I need to stress that your work has blocked them for a reason and circumventing that reason is at your own risk.

That said, if you are able to browse the web, then you can have IM by going to either of these sites:

    http://www.meebo.com
    http://www.koolim.com

    Everything else should be self-evident.

If your workplace actively blockes either of the two sites, you can try to reach them by using Google's foreign website translation proxy:
    http://www.google.com/translate?lang...=www.meebo.com
    http://www.google.com/translate?lang...www.koolim.com

Meebo provides a Meebo Repeater, a Meebo-specific proxy-type program, as well.

Another avenue is to use a service like Chatango, which is Flash-based.
Chatango does not use any of the common IM clients -- it is an IM client in and of itself, where those who wish to contact you can go to screenname.chatango.com and chat without even having a Chatango account. The added bonus of Chatango, besides anonymous chatters finding you (if you call that a bonus), is that you can put the chat window on any webpage -- this means you can put it in your own webpage, so I can do something like this: http://linus.grumblemutterspit.org/chat.php.

Hey, if the sysadmin is wise enough to block these sites, then folks really should resign themselves to not having IM at work.

If you are to believe them, they are simply a transport of encrypted data. No storage is supposed to occur.

It's obviously not for everyone, but I think I'll stick with SSH and Dynamic Ports.

If you're that paranoid just use AIM. It isn't tied to an email account like Y! or MSN -- just screenname and password.

id be more worried about them reading the contents of my traffic later. hence the use of gpg and otr ontop of aim/jabber/etc.

watch out for the engineers that run tcp logging tools for later analysis ;-)

Sure, if you're IMing stuff concerning work or your lack of work or anything work-ish, then you may have problems.

If this is a concern, then any solution to reach blocked ports is no solution.

I'm not paranoid enough to think my IM chatter is worth encrypting, though I do have the encryption modules loaded onto Miranda just in case.

Both my Yahoo and MSN screennames are tied to accounts I never check.

However, that does not preclude the concern that tunneling IM traffic through an unknown third-party is a ... less than intelligent move.

This is assuming IMing is intelligent.

get yourself involved in a large court case, and your paranoia and lack of trust in others will go *way* up.

Nah, it's not that bad. I do enough to keep things secure and enforce the policies without going too overboard on trying to control every packet. That last 1% takes too many manhours that I just don't have. And I know which people I need to watch more closely than the rest... Sometimes I'll be nice and turn a blind eye for a while.
