help: TEST PIPE OR DOWNPIPE?
i was wondering which would give better performance gains with a stock exhaust, test pipe or downpipe, and what are the chances of gettin caught with a test pipe here in sd. my car is a passat 1.8t giac chip.
anyone know someone who does downpipes for a reasonable cost?

well if you want trouble from the cops go test
but if you want some performance i say go down pipe or just full turbo back
pm me if you want some prices on a good downpipe

X2 on full turbo back. Still get nice performance without all the hassle
I drive crap. Expensive crap...

a turbo back means i have to get a test pipe right?

Re: help: TEST PIPE OR DOWNPIPE?
well you can get a dp that has no cat...and then just run piping eliminating the resonator and then a nice muffler
that will get you the most power...and still a nice rumble...but not a rice sound

yee a significant diff
a cat back might add a tiny bit of power but will be more sound...a turboback will relieve the turbo of back pressure thus helping it spool faster and overall breathe better
think about...when you breathe in you want enough air to keep you standing...but when you breathe out you still want to breathe out enough so that you dont start huffing
hahah maybe not the best metaphor...but im sure you get it

isnt a testpipe basically a downpipe with no cat or resonator???
anyway other then for sound theres no point in adding a test pipe or downpipe if u plan to leave ur exhaust stock
as the saying goes ur exhaust is only as strong as its weakest link so if ur running a 3" or 2.5" dp with a 2"cat back u might as well run 2" all the way cuz no matter how much the bigger dp frees up ur exhaust flow its still gonna botle neck once it gets to the "tighter" pipe

yea fomr my experience...the only thing a cat-back does for our cars is sound and maybe 3 horses....
the DP and turboback is were the power is

Re: help: TEST PIPE OR DOWNPIPE?
Honestly, there's not that much power difference between a highflow cat and a testpipe. For the hassle and trouble you can run into while running a testpipe, and the minimal power differences (high flow cats these days flow really quite well) You're much better off running it than a testpipe.
Also, there really isn't all that much more restriction in the cat-back. Most of the restriction is the in the catalytic area, and that's where most of the bottleneck is in cars anymore.

Re: help: TEST PIPE OR DOWNPIPE?
you think i can run some sort of universal hi flow cat on my passat since the high flows that bolt on are so expensive?

Re: help: TEST PIPE OR DOWNPIPE?
probably, but to put it on nicely, you'll probably want to go to a muffler/exhaust shop and have them do it, which is going to be more money, when you could've just bought the bolt-on

Re: help: TEST PIPE OR DOWNPIPE?
I don't have a VW, but I used to run open down pipe
and felt no performance drop after a full exhaust (Cat, rear muffler)
Same power, same full boost rpms.
I say a bigger down pipe is where your money should be.

Re: help: TEST PIPE OR DOWNPIPE?
Don't bother with a test pipe. If you get stopped its a big fine and its really not worth the emissions for the performance gain anyway.
Get a downpipe with a cat on it and you'll be happy. For your car, you'd be in the market for a 2.5 inch or a 3 inch pipe.
FWIW, you can probably get a full turbo back exhaust with a cat, muffler, and resonator for around 800 from an exhaust shop. I paid 650 for my setup but I had a downpipe. They replaced my cat and everything behind it.

Re: help: TEST PIPE OR DOWNPIPE?
is it ok to do your exhaust in stages?
I plan on getting a genesis autosport DP, and a few months down the line put in a 2.5" milltek catback.
Or should i jsut wait and get a full turboback system?

Totally.. I made my own 3in DP, welded in my factory cat, and out of the cat it goes 2.5in into a SS eurosport... I got the eurosport catback for $127.50 off of e-bay, I think exhaust prices are a rip-off. look for used stuff or do a custom setup... save your money for something else.

thats very true...but i learned through my own experience that even with a 3 or 2.5in downpipe the stock cat is still too restrictive (but then again that was when i ran my BT)...but if you dont mind that go with it or consider a highflow cat

Re: help: TEST PIPE OR DOWNPIPE?
Definately get a highflow cat on whatever downpipe you get.
They flow way more than stock and that is where your real bottleneck is. The rest of the downpipe is restrictive too but the cat is the worst piece.
