    Flipped Tie-Rod Ends

Who all here has flipped the the tie-rod ends in their classic? I'm finally down to a point where i need to do it, as I need to get some more clearance, and lose some bump steer, and I'm looking to see if anyone around's done it, and looking to see if there's anything I should know beforehand.

Someone online sells a kit to do it. It comes with a drill bit and another tapered inset. How low are you going? Is your beam narrowed? I don't think you can get low enough with a ball joint beam to need to flip them unless you are scrapping the pan then the ball joints may bind.

I've got a 5" narrowed, and my front sway is about an inch and a half off the ground, and I'm looking to go a hair lower, yet (and probably reshaping the sway, at the same time)

So you aren't running shocks? I would ditch the sway bar too. that low and narrow you won't be able to drive fast enough to need it unless you are pointed straight. Here is a sticky from the Samba

    Re: Flipped Tie-Rod Ends

Correct, no shocks. If i ever redo it, it'll probably be 4" narrowed, with shocks... but that's a ways off,at least.

Originally, i tossed the sway (literally, into the dumpster) just a few weeks ago, I picked up another one, and narrowed it 5" to match my front beam, and I'm glad I did. Even as small as it is, it def. still cuts down on body roll (I was having issues rubbing my tires on the headlight buckets on freeway ramps) and it made it so much nicer.

I've read through the sticky a couple of times, but I've learned that there's usually something everyone forgets to write up, that's memorable, but I guess with just reaming and flipping, there isn't much to it.

I can't for the life of me remember who sells the kit, maybe CIP1?

yeah, i think cip1 sells them, I know MAM sells them, I just like the reaming method, as it's easier to flip them back over if i need/want to later, which is why I was looking for that snap-on tapered ream

I have a set of ball joint Ghia disc brake spindles with calipers if you are interested in doing another set off the car and swapping them out. Let me know if you want them, the calipers need to be rebuilt, but they have been collecting dust for the last decade. I had them before you could buy a kit off the shelf!

I take it you will need to have them shipped to Australia? Call Bow Wow Import Parts / Autovice in Lynwood WA (north of Seattle) +1 425.771.6411 - they are doing some mail order now but still setting up the website, not sure if they are shipping international or not though.

Ask for Bill - if you need something for an air-cooled VW he can get it, he probably found and ordered most of the aftermarket parts in my bug. He can even dig up the hard to find nos stuff they don't make reproductions of anymore.
If you have to sit on a stack of pillows to see over the dash, you shouldn't be driving.
