thats awesome! I love bay windows. Splits have there charm, but they arent nearly as comfortable on the road. 71 was the best year, first year of disc brakes, and the last year of the type 1 engine.

Well, my .02 cents we be towards a 2002. The old sixes are nice, but not near the cult status, nor are the parts as available as cheaply or easily. If you do want a 6, get a 635 with a manual. Make sure you buy the nicest one you can with the best paint and interior. That will cost you way too much to set straight. The dashes for the L6 were like $7K 10 years ago, just for the dash! M6's are cool too, but can cost $$$ if you need to open the motor.

For the 2002 I would find a nice early one, four speed, whatever and junk the clunky old engine. Nuts to the tii's they're mechanical injection is finicky, all the guys that know how to tinker with them and set up the pumps are literally dying off. You can sell that shit off to the purist wine tasting set for big $$$ and swap an S14 from an E30 M3 into it and a MOTEC or similar stand alone system into it. That should be plenty fast and keep the weight down. I may know of a tii for sale. Also the S14 EVO3 48MM throttles and 52MM headers. LMK if you are interested!

They are around in various shapes, they are rare, but at the same time, there are still enough of them that it doesn't make sense to buy a clapped out rusty car unless you have good body skills.

That is nice, makes me miss my old Bay Window "Jesus" - Split Windows are great for cruising, status, cool factor. Bays have more room and as Mike said ride more comfy. I was surprised when I picked up a early 80's Vanagon (Last of the air-cooled) in a swap for an old laptop and used it for a shop van (christened "Foxy Brown"). I always thought they were ugly, but I was really surprised at how well it handled and rode compared to a Bay Window.

My vote for next project - 2002. They look really nice when they are done right. There is a big 2002 club in Western Wa, I believe they are based out of Olympia. There were a couple of jaw droppers in that click, but the rest were these tacky things with tons of spoilers and crap tacked on.

I had a red 70 camper westfalia. Didn't nearly look as beautiful as your red beaut. But it did have the cot on top and I also had the tent. She was my Castle on wheels. But she didn't have a very good L turn radius due to an accident before I had er, so a U-turn was indeed a 3pt turn. Oh good times and many many miles...
