    World Record Bug Engine Change

Wow - and I thought I was speedy doing it in a leisurely afternoon with coffee, cell phone, and snacks.

Re: World Record Bug Engine Change

my friend matt and i have done it several times in under 15 minutes..with just two people
start to finish...in other words putting the car up on jack stands and all. we used to swap his race motor to his street motor on damn near a weekly basis
but seeing as the dude underneath didnt bring any tool with him its safe to say the four bolts that hold the engine to the tranny are only hand tight.

not taking away from them, they did do it super fast, but i honestly think alot of corners were cut

Yeah.. putting a bug engine removal and drop it back it in isn't hard at all.. the hardest part is re-aligning the trans to the clutch. Pretty fun though... Fun cars to work on.

^^ Good Idea, a little pit crew competition!!

Sounds great, but say someone makes a mistake and gets hurt. That's a whole lotta liability there. =\

Re: World Record Bug Engine Change

I think someone might have posted it a couple weeks ago, but at some event somewhere else they had this big teeter totter thing that guys would drive up on and then get it to balance, then get it to tip the other way and drive off, all via some fancy clutch work. That looked like it'd be fun and pretty foolproof as far as safety goes.

Re: World Record Bug Engine Change

I had an upright conversion on my 68 fastback, with a quick connect fuel line to the pump. A buddy of mine had a 67 beetle with pretty much the same setup, both ran stingers and a single 40mm idf carb.

We timed each other and raced, one guy for each car. I spotted and ran the clock for him, and he spotted and ran the clock for me. I had mine out and back installed in 16 minutes, using hand tools. He did it in 13 minutes.

It really really easy once you've done it before. Trick with lining up the clutch is to pull the 2 front plugs so you can spin the motor by hand.

I suppose I could do on in 15 minutes, but that is like real work. When I do one:
    *jack up bug
    *talk to neighbor
    *disconnect wires and fuel lines
    *get beverage (coffee usually)
    *take a couple bolts out
    *talk on phone
    *go get boom box
*take a couple more bolts out
    *wash hands and make snack
and so on until it is done - then install is the same way....
If you have to sit on a stack of pillows to see over the dash, you shouldn't be driving.

Yeah It definetely was a hussle. When we did it we timed the removal, then stopped the clock. I needed to rejet my carb, so I did that after it was out, put it back together, then timed the install. My buddy was swapping to an alternator from a generator. Same thing. timed the removal, converted the wiring and mounted the alternator, then timed the re-install.

    It was fun, but tiring.
