Ford Escort Cosworth RSs had 4-cylinder motors and there have been plenty of them tuned to above 1000hp.

That WRX is pretty brutal btw.

many cars both here in the states and in europe with the pinto 2.0 engine have had any where from 600 to over 1000 bhp both n/a and blown

here ya go. N/A four banger in the Porsche 951/968. These things are little terrors. 50/50 weight split. Not too much money to mod the turbos and they were FAST. The 968 was N/A 3.0L 4 cylinder. When I worked for the race shop, we had one that put out 3.7L and 550 RWHP on pump.
