trans swap question
Aside from the 02J transmission (the 5-speed standard on the 2.0) what other transmissions can bolt directly to the 2 liters? Perferably an all wheel drive trans. This is for a MK4 Golf.
Here's my thought. I want to do a 4motion conversion on my car (yes, i'm crazy). Since the R32 are so damn expensive/rare I'm going to use an Audi from roughly the same year. The quattro systems are direct bolt ins. I'm trying to figure out if I can just swap the transmission and transfer box or if I would have to swap the whole engine. Not that it's a big problem, I would just rather the gas mileage of the 2 liter compared with the 3.2. Thanks in advance.

Re: trans swap question
the real hard part about going all wheel drive is the rear floor pan needs to be swapped with the Audi one. If you are a great welder and fabricator then go for it, but if not it will be really expensive to have done. A guy on Vortex did a pretty good DIY for it and it is something I would not want to attempt.

Re: trans swap question
I've done a few read throughs on the conversion process mostly from HPA motorsports. The floor pan will be a bitch, and I don't know the best plan of attack as far as spot welding. I have a buddy that's a pretty good welder. Question on your comment though. Could I use the Audi floor pan? I was thinking I'd have to find the R floor pan. If I can use the Audi one that'll make this a whole lot less expensive.
I'll browse the whortex and see if I can find that write up.
I should note too, this is a way long term project. i'm going to be buying a new car in about 2 months so I'll need a side project.
I figure there aren't too many AWD 4 door golfs :P

Re: trans swap question
From my understanding if your doing this to a jetta you can use the audi floor pan, for a golf though you need to find a crashed R32. Basically you need a crashed audi(jetta) or R32(golf) so you have all the sensors, modules, control units. Then your going to need to wire them all up, and encode your ECU through vagcom to get it all to connect and recognize each other. At this point why would you even keep the 2.0 slow, if you find a wrecked R with all this in it most likely it's going to have the engine with it as well. Sure you can sell the engine to recoupe some of the costs but whats the point of doing all this work to get AWD if your engine isn't going to produce the type of power thats going to really need it? If this is going to become a side project and it isn't your daily driver are you really worried about MPG on the car at that point? I would save yourself a lot of electrical trouble and just swap the whole harness, ecu, sensors, modules, engine into your golf and call it a day. Then again the added length of the 4 doors over the 2 doors the R32 has might mean the drive shaft won't reach so that's something you gotta look into as well.
ANyway point of the story is, if your gonna do all this work to convert over to AWD(if you do document it with a nice thread I would really love to read about it and see pictures) you might as well make the engine powerful enough to really take advantage of the AWD, you know make the juice worth the squeeze kinda thing.

Re: trans swap question
why would you want this tho? just buy a audi and project it cuz with a awd golf your just throwing money away if you do attempt this post pics. maybe find diff engine to swap into the golf, not sure what would fit but ppl are swapping 4.2L a8 engines, ls1s, 350's, into the audis so they are workable with the quattro system. try to find out if the 4.2 will fit i doubt it will but that in your golf with awd, perfection.

IMO, it's pointless mating a 4WD drivetrain to a 2.slow engine....You will spend $XXXX and you're not going to go faster. The 2.slow won't even have enough power and torque to justify 4WD. If you're worried about gas mileage, keep in mind 4WD might increase your gas consumption due to the extra weight and load of the 4WD drivetrain, all for $xxxxx and no power increase, not to mention the extra maintenance of a 4wd drivetrain. If you decide to go through with it, go all in or nothing and include a better engine and just man up to a decrease in gas consumption. Don't even think you will have the same gas consumption compared to FWD after the swap just because you have a 2liter engine. Just something to think about, but if your objective is just to have an AWD 4dr golf just for the hell of it, then go for it....I assume you will source your parts from a 1.8 Audi TT AWD or an A3?

Re: trans swap question
I've been looking around at a few junk yards specializing (or with mostly) german cars. It seems I can pick up a pretty inexpensive, totaled a4 or TT quattro. At this point it's really all just a dream. I need to save up a bit to buy the initial parts car. If I can find a totaled TT with the 3.2 6-speed and AWD then I'd just do the whole swap, it'd be easy and I wouldn't have to screw with the ECU. Plus, a staged turbo setup for the 3.2 could be down the pipes a bit later
My initial cause for asking about which trans will fit the 2 liter is mainly because I like the 2 liter and it's a shame it gets such a bad rap. I think there's a lot of potential in a cast iron blocked 2 liter. I mean look at some of the WRC car's engines, Block's Fiesta has an ~800HP 2 liter.
DXcMagus, from my research into this swap, the donor car doesn't really matter as long as it's an A4 chassis. I need to find out what makes the most sense for the trunk pan though. I know from previous dealings that the actual trunk area is longer in the jetta than the golf. My current exhaust is from Jettaone420's old Jetta and when we swapped it into my car we had to cut about 5"s out. So i'm thinking (hoping really) that the audi trunk floor is the same shape just a bit longer. Ultimately, if I go through with this, i'd like to only need to buy one audi. Getting anywhere near a R is going to make this really expensive considering only 5K of them came to the states. Worst case scenario, i take the trunk floor out and measure and cut my own piece of sheet steel.

Re: trans swap question
you can forget about an Audi A4 as a donor as the engine and transmission are mounted longitudinally ala RWD....
