dead laptop....
Ive had great results from buying Dell refurbished laptops. Much cheaper than new, and up until now, ive never had an issue with it. My first one was 5 years old and the keyboard needed replacing so I opted for another unit. The one I got was a great laptop, does everything I need with ease. Its 3 years old and apparently the motherboard died. I took it to a laptop repair place and they said it would take $350+ to replace and that its not worth fixing, just buy a new one. I really like this one and would like to have it working again.
So ill put it out here, anyone have the ability to replace it and have it work again for a couple hundred bucks?
OR
Anyone need a Dell XPS for parts? LOL!!

Re: dead laptop....
If it's the motherboard then it's not worth it. New laptops are very affordable and this year's new Sandy Bridge chips provide a new leap in processing power, so you'd be surprised at the performance. What Dell XPS model and spec do you have?

Im just not into joining the throw away society!
Im not sure on the specs as it wont turn on to tell me. it does say XPS M1530 on the top. I recall it was a 2.3ghz machine, 50gbhd 2gb ram, 15" lcd screen, built in web cam. It has this fingerprint bullshit that I hated, never used. I was just looking at new laptops on the site and theyre $500 and up. The problem is there are so many variations I dont know what I need VS want ect... I do know I dont like a plastic case like what I got my wife. I hate this thing. (Im using it til I decide on what im gonna do....)

Craigslist.org. I've bought all my macbook pro from other people. Make sure to inspect the unit before buying.

Re: dead laptop....
I had the M1330 XPS and had to have the motherboard replaced. Luckily dell replaced it after warranty due to a faulty nvidia gpu. It is still a piece though as it get really hot and shuts down and kills batteries like a mother.
Look at something like this for $400.

I understand. I run a refurbished Dell Inspiron slim with a Sempron chip as an HTPC and still running strong after five years (changed the video card out twice as tech got cheaper).
The problem with laptops is that they are inherently a throw away technology. Once the warranty is gone, replacement of core components is just a big pain in the butt. If it's just the RAM, the hard drive or even the keyboard it's pretty easy to repair, but once the motherboard, screen or something with power goes it's pretty much a dodo.
What do you want out of a laptop, if you had to get a replacement (new or refurbished)?
The XPS was a gaming laptop and so had a decent video card. However, the new Sandy Bridges with the on-board Intel HD 3000 video processor is already better than the GeForce 8400M GS in that XPS, so as long as you buy a modern (this year's) i3 or i5 laptop the performance will exceed what you were running.
The real test, as you have already identified, is the look and feel of the laptop. These devices are very personal, much like a phone, in that they need to fit our needs ergonomically and aesthetically far more than a desktop that sits in a room.
My personal favorites are IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads and Dell Latitudes. I also don't like glossy displays. I have no use for IPS and gorilla glass if it means my face is reflected back at me. I prefer the ThinkPad over the Latitude because ThinkPad warranties are ridiculously good, plus the keyboard and trackpoint are, to my fingers, the best of their kind among laptops.
You will have to spend around $500, however, but even that will get you a lot of laptop if it's a Sandy Bridge.
Just looked. Dell has a sale today on the Inspiron 15R, and it looks like they'll have sales all summer, so you may want to just keep an eye on their site.

That's an older i3, though. An extra $100 gets you a lower temperature, faster CPU and GPU in the new i3 (the ones with four numbers to their model).

Re: dead laptop....
I refuse to buy ANYTHING from Dell anymore. Their choice to outsource to India for shitty tech support, terrible customer service is to blame. You want to order something, great, to Tennessee your call is dispatched. Need help, hour on hold to India, call gets hung up on, then when you get through, its someone who can barely speak english. I literally spent 3 hours on the phone tying to get my hard drive warrantied on my desktop. Then they tried to say that by me installing aftermarket software it voided my warranty. No thanks.

I like Latitudes, but yes, Dell support is hit or miss. ThinkPad support is excellent (even if they sometimes route you to somewhere else). I just had to do that this morning. Purchased a docking station and got it in last night. It was an open box purchase but it still had an intact warranty (ThinkPad website lets you search by S/N to easily check warranty status) so I called, they took down my info, asked a few questions, then said, "Okay, we'll send a replacement by UPS next day and when you get it put the bad unit in the box to give back to UPS."
Handled by one operator, no scripted Q&A (that was detectable), and the part is on the way.
Did I mention I love ThinkPads? Because it's just nice to have the bonus of good support, too. By the way, Lenovo IdeaPad support is completely different and is on par with Dell... go figure.

Re: dead laptop....
We can only order Dell's now at work also, and now that there is a model change it's been hell ordering laptops! But we used to use Lenova's . . . to be honest, I like them a lot more than the Dells! They may not look as nice, but they work, and keep working! Because of the change over, we just ordered a couple of Samsung Series 9's!! They look badass . . . time will tell though!
