    rule #1... remove wedding ring
other than that, the shots are getting better and better, so are the models. nice work man keep it up.

How many lights are you shooting with? single strobe? If so i would suggest getting a couple additional lights and reflectors to help reduce shadows further. But they are looking better and better. Good use of DOF in some shots. You may want to look at getting some cleaner glass for sharper photos and better bokeh.

Very nice work. You're stuff is getting better rapidly. I'm also curious to hear about your light setup.

My only nitpick is the cropping. I don't like it when parts of the body get cut off, like the top of her head in #4 and #12. I understand that it's unavoidable sometimes, but I don't have to like it.

white balance looks a little off in all of them. Did you shoot raw? if this was a desired effect to warm the skin tones, it worked. But I might suggest knocking out the background so that it's not quite so obvious that it was a white balance trick. If it wasn't planned, then be sure to figure it out, as resolving white balance issues with strobes sooner rather than later will be to your benefit.

This model looks pretty experienced. Easy to work with?

The composition looks pretty dang good.

OK, I'll try to answer/respond to everything so if I miss something let me know.

    Wedding Ring:
She's not married but yah, should have had her take that off.

    Tan Lines:
Yah, none of these are really "professional" shoots yet so I'm not being nitpicky about things that professional models should have like hair, makeup, manicure, tan, etc.

    Lighting:
Shooting with a single studio strobe and mounted flash. It's the only lights I have (the strobe was given/lendedededed for free so I can't complain). I just received the diffuser Godzilla suggested in another thread. I'll try that out and see how that works out. I don't really have the capital to spend on more lights right now.

    Glass:
Segway from above, I don't have money to buy better glass. The only good lens I had is my 50mm 1.4 which is what most of those shots were taken with. When I get cash I'll invest in a couple L lenses.

    Cropping:
As stated above most shots were with my 50mm and I had limited room to move back to minimize cropping. Also, my learning process is a lot of "see one, do one" so I'll look at photos that crop body parts and try that. Are there any rules of thumb or general guidelines in terms of this and composition? Or is it more personal preference?

White Balance: I shot in RAW and manipulated the white balance because her skin tones did look better. I guess next time I'll leave the white balance balanced and enhance her skin tones another way. Any suggestions?

    Model:
This was actually only her second shoot. You should see the 200 or so shots before we got to this point. It took a few hours before she warmed up and I was able to get a few "come f me" looks out of her.

white balance - if you're mixing strobes and flash, it's going to be VERY hard to get it right. what kind of strobe are you using? most manufacturers will tell you what kelvin temperature their strobes are, so that you can set the balance accordingly. Of course, shooting a few 100 kelvin warmer than they are will give you nicer skin tones.

    look at this pic:

Notice how the sheet is white? but the background is kinda reddish? if you use quick mask, and select out the wall / background, then delete it so that it is pure white, nobody will be able to tell that you warmed up the w/b.

    and in this one:

the sheets have a very obvious red hue to it.

if you're going to warm the picture up, that's fine. But quickmasking the model and only warming up HER skin tones will produce a much more realistic image.

Strobe is a White Lightning X1600

And funny talk about the sheets.... I threw them in the wash with my red towels and voila. I no longer need to white balance because my sheets aren't white anymore. So much for my brand new 440tc sheets.

who makes that "white lightning" strobe? never heard of it... or is it an ebay special?

haha, and no wonder the sheets look white when everything else has a red cast to it...

if you have your white balance set to "auto", then it's probably adjusting the white balance to the sheets. You should always either do a custom white balance, or at the very least, start with one of the pre-sets. IE: shoot it in Flash or Incandescent mode, then make small adjustments from there to the RAW.

    That's hilarious about the sheets.

Another white balance trick is the whi-bal card. Don't have the link handy, but if you shoot raw it's considered a necessary tool.

I know some people even use it when they shoot jpeg.

i can't find it on their site, but call them up, and ask them what kelvin temperature to set your white balance to.

OK, so I should get one of those 18% grey cards to white balance? And how would I balance the strobe with the flash? Set the camera's white balance kelvin to that of the strobe?
