Brian takes us back in the day with his '88 GTI

    Back in the Day…
Brian Quiros and his Clean ‘88
    Words: Brad Harvey - daygoVR6, socaleuro.com
    Photos: Cedric Rivier

The MkII GTI is arguably one of the most versatile Volkswagens ever brought to the U.S. During their heyday these cars were used for everything, from grocery –getters to all-out badass street machines giving the other import cars in the U.S. market a run for their money. Brian’s GTI is no exception to that. His ’88 GTI reminds me of how the euro trend during the mid and late ‘80s helped mold the industry into what it is today. Brian, being no stranger to the old school euro cars, once owned a modded Volkswagen truck sporting a 16 valve 4 cylinder that at one point in time had quite a large turbo bolted up to it. I’m not surprised to see that when he got a hold of this ’88 from his sister and brother in law, he went thru and gave it the final touches that it needed to get it to where you see it now.
The body kit is something you can't find anywhere, and if you think you are going to find one think again as the kit is not even made anymore. The car was already sporting the Orciari body kit giving it a wider stance and smooth bumpers along with the Freedom Design hatch wing when Brian took ownership. The car was sent to Frank and Sons Body Shop in Chula Vista, CA to have the body work done on the car, including shaving of all VW badges to give the back end a cleaner look. Hella Half-smoked tail lamps were used in place of the stock ones while Jetta rear door handles were used in place of the factory handles. The alunimum gas cap was installed along with a Freedom Design rear hatch wing to set off the racer feel. A color matched Kamei grill spoiler helps give this car a more aggressive look when looking at the front end. E-code Aero headlamps along with McCulloch 5000K HID lamps have also been installed to compliment modern day euro-styling. To keep the hood from looking like a plain sheet of metal, a set of Kamei vent scoops were added to help with keeping the engine cool during hard runs. A mono wiper conversion was then installed to keep the European appeal that made these cars so popular. Finally, generous coats of Porsche Arena red were applied, bringing all these exterior changes together and creating a distinctive car that cannot help but stand out in the crowd.
The car looked amayzing but Brian wasnt looking to owen a flashy show car, instead he wanted a functional drivable show car. Keeping with the nostaliga of this MK II Brian chose to stretch a set of Toyo Proxys 205/40/16's on all four corners over a set of Borbet Type A rollers. The suspension is kept simple, a set of Eibach sport springs are used to bring the car closer to the ground while Bilstein shocks soak up the bumps in the road. A Neuspeed front strut bar and an Autotech rear strut bar are installed to help reduce chassis flex during hard cornering. Slotted rotors and painted calipers were also used to keep things looking tidty in the wheel wells.
The engine is a great example of just how well these engines were built. With 375,000+ miles on the odometer it has never been rebuilt! The stock block 1.8 liter 16 valve is sporting a polished intake manifold to go along with some of the other selected powder coated parts, giving the engine compartment something more to look at than just a dirty engine bay. An ABD high-flow intake gives the engine more air to breathe, while a Remus 2.25 exhaust system mated to a high flow cat helps get rid of exhaust gasses quicker. The Autotech KE Jetronic power module assists in ECU duties. As tame as this sounds Brian is currently working on installing a turbo system on this engine using a Kinetic Motorsport turbo exhaust manifold matched up with a Garrett T3 AR.42 turbo. An MSD Boost retard ignition control unit will also be installed as well as some custom exhaust piping and some minor engine work to get the engine to where it will be able to handle the added boost from a turbo. Currently, the stock 020 transmission is shifted with the aide of Autotech short shift linkage as well as a stock clutch, but that too will be changed out once the new turbo is installed.
It’s all business in the drive seat as Brian has installed powered Recaros and Schroth 3 inch harnesses to keep him planted in the car. A Momo steering wheel and shift knob keep the racer look going as well as the Autopower bolt-in 4-point roll cage. The Vortex console has been given the white overlay treatment and a triple-gauge plate is in place to read engine vitals via Autometer boost, air/fuel, and oil pressure gauges. Brian also keeps the tunes bumping through an Alpine 7995 head unit feeding into an Alpine 5-channel amp, which is powering Alpine Type R speakers with crossovers thoughout the interior. A JL Audio W3V2 10-inch subwoofer is mounted in a bass tube giving the deep bass-driving beats that can be heard from the car. A 710c Viper alarm as well as an anti-theft shifter U-lock has been installed to keep possible car thieves at bay.
Brian has a great example of some old-school cool that keeps us wanting more in this industry. Lately, more and more of these MK IIs have been popping up at euro shows. Maybe it’s because these cars can be found relatively cheap and don’t drain your wallet at the pump. They still have plenty of tuner potential in this growing industry as well, everything from simple mods to all out pristine show cars. The trouble is, eventually these cars will all be gone Then again, that’s what people said about the Volkswagen Beetle.

What ever happened to Europaisch? I was a member back when we opened our shop (Metric Motorsports) in San Marcos back in 96. But lost touch and when I went to try to find the site a couple years ago it wasnt up anymore.

thats a sweet lil gti right there my dad had one also and a sirocco1 he's the one that started me in to vw's
Showcars are like porn stars. Chasis are too modified for comfort. They are too expensive to maintain. They are too tempramental to drive everyday. They are meant to be waxed up taken to a show and thruoughly flogged once and a while. We all want one, but wouldn't actually know what to do with one if we got it.
