This is the same question I have for the CHP officer who died in one. Part of CHP training is vehicle control. This guy is told by the chp officer to "turn off the car". (Meaning, push the start/stop button) He admits on the news report that, oh, "after I jammed on the brake and parking brake, the car slowed down to about 50mph.... then he pushed the button and the car turned off". I love this part. "I didnt want to push the button whole driving because I didnt know what it would do".
Fucking morons. They dont make EJECT buttons, YET. So simple what do do yet they are palms against the freshly licked window screaming for help.
How hard would it be to, Put it in neutral? turn off the engine? People died because they cant do that?? Are we fucking serious??
Ive also noticed that everytime some 80 yr old driver goes thru a dry cleaner, thats the first thing they say.
Uh, no, your driving a Daewoo. No free card.
94mph is respectable in a Pruis. Too bad they usually only run 65 in the fast lane.

So what your telling me is this dumbass hasn't ready the new lately and doesnt know some toyotas my have problems and that toyota has recalled the vehicle to fix it.....
... this is a joke. Fuck this guy. Thank gowd no one Innocent was involved. This jackass knew about the recalls and never once opened his owners manual to learn how to shut off his vehicle if some thing like this was to happen... REALLY.. REALLY.... If i was the cop, i'd let the car crash. One less speeding-asshole-prius driver on the road. I get passed by them all the time on the road..... HEy tree huger... open the owners manual and read about ur car!!!!
It is my understanding that it is not quite as easy as you imply.
You need to push and _hold_ the start/stop button to turn off the engine. This is counter-intuitive to someone who is panicking. They tend to frantically whack on the button over and over.
In addition, you _cannot_ put the car in neutral when it is doing this. Since it's all electronic, the software helpfully saves you from accidentally shifting into neutral.
Which is not to say this guy isn't full of crap, since any Prius owner has gotten dozens of pieces of mail about this since the recall happened. But the people that died didn't all die because they were simply too stupid to turn off the car.

You should be able to have 1 good jab at the brakes before the vacuum assist is depleted though..
Another reason we need more manual transmission carsClutch pedal = failsafe (or just make it harder to get a license.. a proper drivers test, DMV charges more, more money for the state. It all works out perfectly in my head!)

Ding ding we have a winner.
This is true and in a panic stricken mode holding the button for 3 seconds didnt come to mind in such short time. Listen to his 911 call. He fried the brakes due to the Lexus being way more powerful then a prius...Try less then a mile at 120 mph.. I would of rolled it if I didnt have anymore brakes and didnt know how to turn the engine off but im guessing he was worried about the others.
As for the prius on recalls the latest one 2010 Prius is the one with the abs braking problems and other problems they are fixing. The earlier ones im pretty sure just have acceleration problems.
They really do need fix the limiter for putting the car in neutral at higher speeds.

wsj was confused.....
<via jalopnik>
A confused Wall Street Journal cited a Toyota PR person, reporting that the 2008 Prius, seen yesterday accelerating out of control in California, will be the subject of a "future recall." They were wrong — it's already been recalled.
A banner story on the front page of the WSJ clearly states a new recall was forthcoming:Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday that the Prius involved in a highly publicized acceleration incident on a California freeway along with hundreds of thousands of others will be the subject of a future recall to prevent floor mats from pinning down the gas pedal. But one click on the Toyota Recall page and they'd have known the 2004 Toyota Prius is on the floor mat recall list.
Someone must have alerted the WSJ to this because they quickly changed the story and the headline, as seen in the image below taken approximately 45 minutes later.
Part of the confusion may stem from Toyota's lack of a solution for second-generation Prius owners and explain why the runaway Prius driver was turned away from the dealership. The rest of the confusion may stem from how boring and forgettable the cars are when they're not accelerating out-of-control.
