Introducing: The New MkVI VW Jetta
Across the globe, the Golf is Volkswagen's most-popular vehicle. In the United States, however, the Jetta reigns supreme. The new 2011 Jetta is a big deal to Volkswagen for the American market alone. The new Jetta marks a departure from Jettas of yore: it is no longer directly based on the Golf/Rabbit. Instead of just grafting a trunk onto the Golf body, Volkswagen developed a completely new platform for the Jetta.
If you thought the MkV Jetta was a big car, wait until you see the MkVI, as Volkswagen has stretched the car another 3.5 inches front-to-back. This should make for a larger, roomier cabin and increased passenger comfort. Gone are the days of the compact Jetta, since now the car has grown into the Midsize sedan category.
The design should surprise no-one, given Volkswagen's latest design direction and the New Compact Concept Volkswagen showed us a few months back. While not too exciting in standard sedan form, it is clean and attractive. The GLI should be able to spice things up a bit.
Under the hood comes very little surprise. Volkswagen has carried over the 2.5-liter 5-cylinder as the base engine, and the 2.0-liter TDI will also be availble. The Jetta GLI will return, sporting the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. You'll be able to get both a manual transmission and a traditional Tiptronic automatic. The DSG transmission will be available on TDI and 2.0T models.
If you've seen the new Golf/GTI interior, the new Jetta interior should come as no surprise. It's very similarly-designed, with a few Jetta-specific design choices, but the layout follows VW's latest form.
As of now, pricing has been officially released, but we have heard news of a base price around $16,000. The new Jetta is expected in showrooms across North America this October.
